So far so good, maybe?
I have done a great job with controlling my eating so far this month. There was only one day where I wasn't being super strict, and on that day I had a baby shower, and even there I ate fruit and veggies first and tried to control my intake. A cupcake was my only true slip, and I keep reminding myself that I never said I'd be perfect and I have to allow myself little indulgences so I don't fall off the wagon and go full binge.
My strategy is a controlled breakfast (300)/snack (100)/lunch (400) at work, and then I went through all of our favorite Blue Apron meals looking for ones under 600 calories that we could do for dinner. I preferred the ones that are also low-ish in carbs. Dessert after dinner has been fruit - clementines and strawberries.
I have done a decent job of working out every day... until I got sick two days ago I had only missed one day (not surprisingly, the baby shower day, and that was really because it was 18 degrees outside that morning which made me reneg on my walk) this whole month. I was all the way down for the count yesterday and today though - really truly about to go to the doctor sick. So... a B on that so far?
I am pretty solidly down 2 pounds, I think. I am actually lower than that right now, but it may be due to sickness so I don't want to count it as a real loss yet. I am really worried about my upcoming work trip. I've been able to secure invites to lots of free food, but that reeks of lack of control to me, yeesh. It would be a shame to blow it all up so quickly. (But if I do, I'll get back on the freaking wagon when I get home and we will do this all again. Dangit.) My hope right now is that my lack of eating during this sickness will result in an inability to super overeat while I'm at conference, thus mitigating the damage. Or something. I did also buy little to go packs of peanut butter thinking that maybe I can snag bread and jelly at my hotel's breakfast so I can make a lunch, again, mitigating the damage primarily to dinner.
I signed up for this mama site that has 15 minute workouts daily, hoping that that will be short enough that I'll even do it on my trip. I haven't tried it yet because of all the sickness. Hopefully this weekend I'll start feeling better and be able to give it a true try. If I like it I'll post the link.
So yeah, on the wagon and feeling pretty good about my progress til I got sick. I have a doc apt in about an hour, so hopefully I'll be good as new and following up shortly!

Big Bend Photography
I was out in Big Bend National Park for a photography workshop last week. The backstory is a friend of mine who also loves BBNP and photography called and asked if I wanted to do a girls trip and I was HELLS YEAH. Then we signed up and I discovered it was being taught by a guy I knew from elementary-high school. Wow. So I wasn't sure how that would go.
Then we got to the park and I got my Boquillas cherry popped. (It was fabulous, btw. Highly recommended.) And then we went by the burn damage because I wanted to get some shots of it. We were talking about photography on the way there and just from chatting with my friend it was obvious to me that I was going to be the least experienced person there. And then, in my freak out, I completely forgot how to do anything. It was terrible. I was terrified.
The good news is the instructor was super friendly when we met up with him and it really wasn't awkward. And the class was small - just me and my friend and one other guy. We went and got our tent set up in hella wind, and then went to shoot the sunset. In the process of that, I managed to remember how to use my camera and even ran some learning experiments, and somehow I became at ease.
The following days were filled with pre-dawn mornings to shoot stars and sunrise, mid-day editing, and then sunset/star shoot evenings.
It was not the sort of workshop where the instructor took a shot and asked us to replicate it. It was more like we'd find a location and then find stuff to shoot. It was really cool because we'd all be within 100 yards of each other, but everyone would come out with something different.
Long story short, I came out with about 20 shots that I'm quite pleased with, and about 5 shots that I'm really really super mega pleased with. I came out knowing how to use my camera soooooo much better, understanding my settings better, but also and most importantly, stretching myself in terms of finding my shot and also really looking for light. It was really a perfect trip. There were a lot of imperfections, but all together, it was perfect.
I've been thinking a lot about it since I got back. I've been trying to work through the shots and do some editing. There is a contest right now at the Bullock museum that I want to enter and I'm trying to figure out exactly which I should submit. The thing is, for me, this is where uncertainty creeps in. There was one shot of bluebonnets that I got while I was there that was backlit. I was originally shooting with the rising sun at my back but at one point I turned around and I saw how the light was filtering through the seed pods and I just thought it was the most lovely thing. And the instructor practically nutted on it. But I put an album of my favorites on Facebook and it is one of the least liked ones. So I started questioning everything. Then I was chatting with a friend and he said maybe it is a shot that only a photographer would love. It kind of killed me.
Another of my favorites is a backlit shot of the instructor's wife with their dog. My "friend" said it looked posed. In truth, the location was selected so she'd be silhouetted as the sun went down, but goodness help me if I could figure out how to pose a dog running up and leaping into her owner's arms! This was really a shooting break and therefore about as candid as you can get.
Gah, now I'm questioning everything.
I was talking with P this morning about it all. He was telling me that he actually likes one of the burn shots that I got. He was saying that it looks "dreamy" because of the shallow depth of focus that I chose and how it sort of distorts the fore/background. "Dreamy" was the word that the instructor chose for the bluebonnet pic. And it is the word that I'd choose for the dog pic. And then I started to think... is "dreamy" my style? That would actually be pretty neat - if it were and if I knew it.
P.S. Totally unrelated, but I've been dropping weight since I got back from BBNP. I was 149.4 when I left, up from 148.4 due to hormones. When I got back I was 148.4 and I was ok with that - I didn't hike a ton and I was grateful not to have gained. But then as soon as I got rehydrated and settled it dropped to 147.4 and then 2 days later to 146.6. Now I don't know if that 146.6 is real yet or not, but for whatever reason I'm SUPER excited about it! It isn't a goal weight or anything, but it is less than 7 pounds away from the upper end of my goal weight range and for some reason less than 7 feels imminently more achievable. Like suddenly, after all these months, I can see that this is really happening. I'm also really proud - I am in the 4th month of losing and I have continued to lose through multiple trips and other temptations. I am solidly on the wagon and I am steadily losing and I am really proud of my consistency this time.
P.P.S. We WERE in the green last month! Just barely, but GREEN!

Well That Wasn't What I Was Expecting
Yesterday I had to eat out for work. We were going to a Thai place. I researched appropriate foods, but approached the meal with trepidation because it was a buffet and I wasn't sure what all would be available. And buffet. And I was hungry. I ended up with about half a cup of fried rice, probably a cup of mixed veggies with some sort of slightly spicy sauce, and a veggie summer roll with about a tablespoon of sweet and sour sauce. I did my best to enter in equivalents into My Fitness Pal, but I had zero confidence in the outcome.
Then this morning I woke up with the typical "I ate out and therefore consumed too much sodium yesterday" thirst, despite the 4 bottles of water I drank yesterday. That never (ever) bodes well on the scale. Never. That always (ALWAYS) means a gain, if only a temporary gain.
So you can see why I approached my scale with dread.
Which is why you will understand my complete shock when I saw a loss. Not just a loss, but a loss past what I was before I started the birth control.
People often ask me why I weigh every day. Industry standard seems to be once a week, or even once a month. I tried once a week when I first started, years ago, but that does NOT work for me, not even a little bit. I know now from weighing daily that I can experience fluctuations on a daily basis of up to 3 pounds. The horror of stepping on the scale for a weekly or monthly weigh in to find yourself heavier when you've been dieting and exercising is incredibly damaging to my fragile mojo. I do much better with the every day weigh in because I can look for trends and not stress out so hardcore on any given number.
The irony here is that usually, USUALLY I find that 3 days at a weight means that I am that weight. So when I started the pill and got a 151.6, I didn't panic. On the second day, I was a little peeved, but still not panicking. On the third day, well, you saw it. Resignation and sadness.
Today I weighed 150 even. Per my own rules, I'd normally not dare to post about it for several days. And it wouldn't be beyond normal for it to fluctuate back up. But it was really really (REALLY REALLY) important to me because even if it isn't where my body settles, it shows that it CAN go down while on the pill. And I needed that. I needed to know that I wasn't completely screwing over all the hard work I've been putting in.
And so, onward through the fog!

PSA: What Not To Say
The other thing that happened this past weekend that I want to talk about was actually the day before the Tejas Triathlon.
We were at a party. I was leaning against a wall with my shoulder blades, with my hips kind of leaning out, chatting with my husband and his friend. A guy sort of comes in and gets in on the conversation and SOMEHOW, I found this happening.
Guy: You look like you're about to pop. When are you due?
Me: I'm not.
Me: I just have bad posture.
ARRRRRRGHHH!
You know here is the thing. I do have bad posture. And I was wearing a tight shirt. And I was leaning with my hips sort of out, probably making me look all Jar-Jar. But duuuude. You just don't say that to a woman. You really shouldn't ask, ever, unless a woman brings it up first. Ever.
Also, ALSO, I've been killing myself mentally about it ever since for not being harder on this guy. Someone needs to teach him not to do that. That it isn't ok to wander around callously remarking on someone's appearance. And that he may think he's asking a fun question, but if he is wrong, he's telling someone they are fat. You could just as easily say, "Do you guys have any kids?" and if the woman is pregnant she'll likely rub that belly and tell you when she's due IF she is pregnant. Otherwise, dude, maybe she IS just fat, and WHOA didn't you dodge a bullet there!
I feel like I spend too much of my life taking shit and disguising it as ME being nice. Like I was talking with an old mentor of mine back in April and she was telling this story about how her boss started using her English skills as ammo against her (she immigrated a number of years ago and occasionally has singular/plural issues and s/he pronoun issues, but she is incredibly smart and well-spoken enough to where you just look past it, at least I always did) and I said, "She can't do that, that is discrimination." And she looked at me and said, "No, it is racism." Why didn't I use that word? Why am I afraid to call a spade a spade?
There was another story recently from a colleague who got approached by a man on a street when we were in Austin and she lectured him on not walking up to women and getting in their personal space. I totally would have taken it. I know I would have. I would have tried to look small and not make eye contact and just tried to book it out of there as quickly as I could. What am I missing in me that I let these things happen and I don't do anything about them.
I know this one isn't as big of a deal as either of the two I just mentioned. But in my head it is the same lack of standing up for myself or others, and it bothers me. This time I think it is because I was at a friend's party, I didn't want to make waves with the friend of a friend, etc. But that shouldn't be ok either.
Back to my here is the thing. I know I'm not what I used to be. I know I need to lose maybe 20 pounds. I know I'm squidgy around the middle. I know these things and I don't like them about myself. But I've gotten to a place in my life where I'm starting to accept them. Not giving up on improving myself, but just seeing myself as I am and realizing that that is ok too. And that I had a baby and I may never be able to go back to seeing my abs. But I have a beautiful kid and this body now also represents that. I want to be healthy. I want to do triathlons and seek athleticism and self-improvement. But I also want to eat cake at birthday parties. And go out to dinner with my former colleagues, and lunch with my new colleagues. And go to dinner once a week at my parents' home without having to being something calorie-countable/controlled. My body is a component of my happiness in that I need to feel good to be happy. I don't need to be 120 pounds and fully ripped to be happy. And MOST days, I'm ok with that. And then shit like this happens and it messes with me big time. BIG TIME. Saturday night I needed to eat a full, well-balanced meal. Instead I felt guilty about the one hot dog and one cupcake I ate after the incident, and then practically bonked following the race the next day, partially due to the terrible lack of edible food at the post-race, but also partially I'm sure due to under-fueling the night before, which then completely jacked my eating for the rest of that day.
Long story short: I am a real woman who faces real struggles around eating and weight management. Not because I eat super badly, not that I eat wonderfully either, but I think more because my body doesn't metabolize as quickly as I would wish. A weight MAINTENANCE calorie count for me seems to be about 1400 calories per day. I challenge anyone to do that on a regular basis. It is really tough. So I gain and I lose as I live my life, and I think that just is what it is. What bothers me the most is that society pressures me to be thin. Hell, I probably did more before that dude got out of bed on Sunday than he will do all week. I am strong. I am capable. I am powerful. I have serious endurance and mental fortitude. I am constantly engaging in personal reflection and continuous improvement. And it pisses me off that someone I've never met can think it is ok to come up to me and comment on my appearance like it is any of his business, AND that when it does happen, it messes with my self-esteem so very much.

Slump
I've had, I think, kind of a combo-slump. The post-triathlon, post-birthday, post-mother's day, post all the traveling... there was just a lot going on, and I think I over-compensated when it was all over by just holing up in my bed.
I recognized what was going on, though, which is at least half the battle. And then I implemented a staged comeback plan. So, last Monday, I started counting calories again. My eating had gotten pretty rough there. The general aim is to net 1400 per day, and I've hit it MOST days. I can pick one day a week not to track. I was actually up to 152.8 after all the festivities, and I'm holding steady at 150 for the past few days, so heading in the right direction there. The second and sort of corresponding goal is more/regular exercise. I did a few times last week but I also gave myself a few passes. This week we are 4 days in and I'm 4 days exercised. This is the goal. (That also realllllly helps with the diet because I can eat more if I work out. Chocolate is so worth working out for.)
The week after the CB&I I was trying to do some speedwork and I did, but I ended up with some tweaking in my right knee. So coming back in I'm going again for slow and steady.
And have I mentioned that humid summer has arrived? I'm not going to break any land-speed records anyways. Summer is something to be survived that makes you stronger.
Oh! I found some new running shorts at Old Navy the other day. I bought them kind of on a whim. They are like my capris only shorter, but quite long - ending just above my knee. I. LOVE. THEM. They totally prevent chub rub like the capris. I should have done this years ago. I got online after testing them twice and ordered five more pair. Because love is love and it may be a loooooong time before I find more to love. They are a little crazy in their print, which makes me feel happy.
Oh and speaking of happy, my pics from the CB&I include the BEST. RUNNING. PIC. EVAR!!! I need to buy it and post it because I LURVE it. I'm 1. Airborne. Always essential for a good running pic. 2. Smiling. I KNOW! And 3. I had put my hair in a ponytail after the swim/bike braid and that both cleaned up my perpetual fly-aways, AND also allowed something which has NEVER happened before and that is ponytail swing in a pic. Oh yeah. Lurve.
Ok, that's all for today.

I'm so sore!
It is the morning of the third day of getting back to exercise and I am SO SORE!
Core 1 really killed my abs, y'all.
And then DDR last night rubbed some hot spots on the bottom of my feet that I'm sure will become callouses but right now they are just sore.
Sore!
Today I'm thinking a nice P90X arms day to give my legs, feet, and abs a break!
By the way, full disclosure. Weight on 1/1/2015 was 150 pounds. Goal weight range is 130-135. I've let stress eating get the better of me in the last 6 months, and stress not-exercising. But this is a new year and I'm already feeling better about things! Also full disclosure: I'm not counting calories... yet. This month is going to be about exercising again. I'm trying to be a bit smarter about what we are cooking and what I'm putting in my mouth, but I am not going to focus on eating yet, and I'm not going to beat myself up if I reach for the extra cookie this month, because frankly, I'm still at the stressy old job and disentangling myself is both stressy, and in some cases will involve goodbye eating. I am trying to mentally set myself up for success by not making a goal that will be too painful. Yet.
Oh and one more thing. I'm already seeing the benefits of exercise in better sleep. I had forgotten how much harder I sleep when I'm working out!

Slow and Steady
I'm another pound down. 138.6. I briefly flirted with the 137's at the end of last week and I was pretty excited about it, but no matter... it'll come eventually.
I'm thinking I've reached the first plateau, which was expected. I know my body was responding to the sheer shock of daily exercise and restricted calories. Now is when the real work begins.
As for last week's exercise, it looked like this, starting Sunday:
Tae Bo
P90X: Arms & Shoulders
Tae Bo
Bike
Tae Bo
Booty Barre
Saturday I was nicely sore and I did a ton of work on both the old house and new, so no exercise.
Sunday was a true day of rest.
This week I'm going to try to add a few double days, on Tuesday and Thursday... we'll see if that takes it up a notch! I am not doing My Fit Foods this week, and actually for the past 2 days I haven't done prepackaged foods at all, but I am counting.
I can already see a slight difference in my clothes. Most of my work pants had become uncomfortably tight. They still aren't loose, but they are far more wearable now, which is really the goal.
I can also feel the difference. I don't know if I said it in this blog, but back when I started in 2007, I can remember after a few weeks, walking down the hallway at work and feeling different. I felt like there was a cobra in my belly, coiled and ready to strike. It is a very vivid memory for me - the day I found my power. I am beginning to feel that way again. And I love it.

Firmly on the wagon
I finally found a My Fit Foods meal that I loooooove: Besto Pesto. Nom freaking nom.
I managed to eat cleanly through to dinner Friday night, when we went to our favorite burger joint and oh, it was soooooo goooooood. At that point I wanted to eat ALL THE FOOD, so, you know, it was good. Saturday I went back on the wagon and was a good girl. Sunday I had a small smoothie at the Globetrotters show, but otherwise I stuck with the plan.
For the first time in a looooooong time, I started Monday morning weighing the same as I did on Friday morning! 139.6. Oh, yes, and I finally saw a drop!
I'm also doing a really good job of getting my 4 bottles of water per day, even over the weekend when I usually lose a bottle.
As for exercise, I started last Monday and it looked like this:
Bike
Bike
Tae Bo
Boot Camp
P90X Arms & Shoulders
Off
Tae Bo
P90X Arms & Shoulders
I am veeeeeeery pleased with this as well! Booty Barre was canceled due to weather, but I still got my workout in. WIN! And I was disappointed when Grasshopper dropped by to tell me that our 5K had been moved to April (APRIL - BOOOOO!), and I did take Saturday off, but I was back at it on Sunday, and that is also a huge win for me, since I really struggle to get off my duff on the weekends.
We also did a lot of moving work from the old house to the new one on both Friday and Saturday, which tangentally counts.
I may need to be flexible with the rest of this week, as I already know I must miss Boot Camp on Thursday, and there is the possibility of another Ice Day tomorrow. But I made it work last week, and I'm finally seeing results, so I know I can make it work again. And I will.

12 in 2012: Books 2 and 3 = DONE
On Friday I finished Dragon's Fire by Anne McCaffrey. I've read almost all of her Pern novels, and I love the series, but this one had gotten past me somehow. Even better, I found it on my library's Overdrive offerings, so I was able to check it out for 2 weeks for free. I was a little stressed about having to get through it in 2 weeks, but I got through most of it in breaks and on lunches (ok, and one afternoon because my Mom was in town and offered to take the baby until dinnertime), and I was so absorbed in it by Thursday evening that I knew I was going to "waste" time on Friday reading. And I did. And it was glorious!
Then when I was cataloging at work the other day, I ran across a YA novel that caught my attention. I actually love to read YA novels. They are great "beach" reads for me - usually 2-4 hours and done, nothing too mentally taxing, just good (good old day) stories. So Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally became #3. It was.... meh... but what a great way to waste a Friday!
Other updates:
Aunt Dollie moved into a skilled nursing facility on Saturday. 6 days after we thought she was dying. The doctor even told her before she left the hospital that he was shocked that she lived. Seriously. The woman must be part cat. Or Energizer Bunny. Or something.
I'm over the worst of my sickness. I've been feeling better since Saturday.
I ran this morning. It was a really great run. About 55 degrees, and I just went out the door, ran for 2.75 miles, and back home. I pushed from the halfway point on, and I really pushed the last few minutes. I've come to the conclusion that I'm not pushing enough. I will work to remedy that.
P and Z and I got family pictures taken on Saturday. I'm so happy that we finally did it, and I'll probably regret not doing it earlier forever. But at least we finally did it. I think they came out really well, and am already plotting doing it again with Gaga and Papi, perhaps for Gaga's birthday, which nicely coincides with Z's 18 month birthday.
I have not managed to avoid eating out this month. I think I've broken down 3 times so far, once when we were out and there was nothing at home and we were all starving, we got PF Chang's take-out, and I got something I knew was relatively healthy/low calorie, once when Aunt Dollie had her heart attack - hospital food, not healthy at all, but what was I going to do?, and once last weekend after we went to see Aunt Dollie, we went to Panda Garden, which has the BEST fried rice EVAR (and is the only Chinese place other than PF Chang's that I know of that doesn't use MSG) and it was sooooooo good and I don't feel guilty at all. :-)
Weight this morning: 133.8. 5 pounds down so far this month! (And it got as low as 132.0 when I was sick and before I ate Panda Garden nomminess.)

Postpartum Weight Loss and more Breastfeeding
I just read this, and lmao.
But she has a point. I've been working out postpartum for what, 4 months now, and I see at best half a pound of weight loss per week. It is really fascinating... it doesn't seem to matter how well or badly I eat, or how or if I work out. I lose an average of half a pound a week. I mean, I even didn't gain weight in Austin when I ate out every day and didn't work out at all! I'm starting to think it is the breastfeeding... can't let too much weight go in case of famine. Or something.
I was reading a mommy message board this morning and saw the old refrain, "9 months on, 9 months off", but at this rate, in 2 months when I hit the magical 9 month postpartum mark, I'll still be 5-10 lbs over pre-preg weight. Bah-freaking-humbug.
I'm hoping when I quit breastfeeding I'll see a big change. I think I'll plan to do a hard core diet/exercise push in conjunction with the quitting. When I quit. I'm starting to want to quit... not sure if I'm just going through a rough patch or if it is real. Going to stick with it until I'm sure of my feelings. It has been a rough few weeks at work and that has all probably contributed to it. Add it to the Z's fever which is making her latch/unlatch over and over and I'm just feeling fed up. And tired. I cannot wait to kill the 3:15am pump session. I am sure of my feelings about that!!
Debbie Downer a bit today, but that's life, isn't it? We're all on a roller coaster and I'm just keeping it real and looking forward to the upswing.

Weekend Update
Friday: got up and hung out with the Z. At some point, decided that I wanted to work on raking the yard. Put her in the moby, layed down a thick comforter in the grass and put her on it, surrounded by toys. Raked. It was actually kind of cool: I was raking all the leaves into the empty spa-hole, both to fill it so we don't have to buy so much dirt and so I didn't have to bag all those leaves. Honestly, it is so much more fun to rake without having to bag!! After P got home I told him I wanted Jax, so we went for a burger. And that was pretty much it for Friday. Z went to sleep and I fell asleep on P's belly while he watched TV. He had to browbeat me to wake up and pump when it was time to move to the bed.
Saturday we woke up early with Z. I went for a nice run along the bayou. I'll spare you the off-leash dog rant, but suffice to say I have reason to rant! It was a beautiful morning for a run, though! After I got back, I told P we should go ahead and head to the grocery store early, and that way it shouldn't be so insanely crowded. I planned out 2 work weeks' menus (Sunday-Wednesday, Thursday is always eating-out because P has school) as such:
Week 1: Lemon Fishy, Mozzarella-stuffed sausage meatballs, Slow-cooker chicken and mushrooms, Wraps Side dishes: Garlicky cream corn and spinach, sauteed mushrooms, mashed potatoes, carrots
Week 2: Maple Salmon, Meatloaf, Chicken Ceasar salad, Wraps
Side dishes: Broccoli and carrots in garlic butter, mashed potatoes, baked sweet potatoes
I'm holding ham, roast, stew, concoction, and mulligitawny in reserve to rotate in during the Fall/Winter, perhaps instead of wraps. And, honestly, I'd like to put the meatballs and meatloaf on a less-often rotation. Actually, if I had enough recipes that we really liked, I'd like to go to a 3 or even 4 week rotation so we don't get sick of anything.
Anyways, the store was excellently empty at 9am on a Saturday - we need to do that more often!! Unfortunately, that was about the last useful thing we did on Saturday! We went to Las Cascadas for lunch, so two days of bad eating for me, and then we walked over to Once Read Twice Sold where we bought 5 board books for Zoë and 1 for Mommy. By the way, Z's current favorite book is The Mixed-Up Chameleon by Eric Carle. She loves all the colors and the tabs make it easy for her to turn the pages. She starts cooing the second we bust it out. (Too bad it is a library book - might have to buy a copy of this one.) Fell asleep on Preston for the second night in a row.
Sunday we worked around the house. More work in the back yard, this time we brought out the big swing for the Zig to hang out in. Laundry. Just trying to get things done.
This week I want to try something different. When I was preggo and all stressed about getting stuff done before the baby, we used to work for an hour after work on things around the house. This was easy because we both knew we had a defined finish point, so we just worked as hard as we could for an hour. I'm in the mood to try that again. We'll see how it goes!
Net gain of 1 lb this weekend: 140.8 Bad eating = bad girl.

No Internet
3:30am, pumping. Why isn't the Internet working? Don't the Internet gods know that the wee hours are prime "feeding" times?
Fine, I'll draft my weekend update and post later. I'll even rotate my iPhone and type with two thumbs, the way P says you're supposed to.
Friday was a bad day. It is hard to explain, and it sounds evil, but I just wasn't into being a mom that day. I was letting Z's saucer do some babysitting for me while I ate lunch and watched tv. At some point she got really quiet. I figured she was bored and so got her out to hang out on my lap (where my grand plan was to dangle toys in front of her for her to grab and drop), and when I picked her up, there was poop everywhere. Everywhere. I felt like such an asshole. I wanted to give her a bath, but I had never done it alone and I was scared. After beating myself up over what kind of crappy mom can't even give her kid a bath, I did it. I just held her while the water was running and I ran around collecting the necessities. Then I sat on the side of the tub and bounced her on my knee while I drew the water. Once she was in, the only major change was always keeping a hand on her, and skipping her back... Then I sacrificed a towel to total wetness so I could use it as a grip for picking her back up. It worked, and I was so glad, because that had been the part I was really scared of. I still wasn't feeling it for the rest of the day. Even after the poo-tastrophe, I still wasn't as "involved" with Z as I normally strive to be. And it didn't help that she was hardly napping. By the time P got home, I was all, "here, take the baby". Ugh. And trying to fit in the thrush meds was difficult and frustrating. And I breastfed her twice, but it was hurting, so I wanted to pump, but I never can figure out what to do with her while I pump. So I waited til she napped. And lo and behold, she literally napped just long enough for me to pump. And therefore I had no break from mommy stuff. It was lame. The whole day was just lame.
So Saturday I told P that maybe it'd help me if we got out a bit. He tried to take Z as much as possible, and we headed to Red Lobster and then BRU. I knew what I needed/wanted at BRU: some pumping stuff, breast pads (disposable, so as not to encourage the hanging around of thrush), and baby bows and shoes. We still dropped $100 there, though! I don't know how it happens, but I need to stay away from that place: I can't get out of there cheaply. Ever! Then that afternoon P needed to nap because he was going into work at 9pm for a shutdown. I did well, Z and I went to Target and played around. Then he was back with me to get her down for bed before he went to work. I think it was the first time I had been "alone" in the house since the Zig was born, and by "alone" I mean that I could reasonably expect that she wouldn't wake up. What did I do? Pumped and watched tv for 45 minutes, then crashed at 9. Sad, really.
Sunday morning, I got up with Zoë and went into the livingroom as soon as she woke so P could sleep. She didn't want to go back down, and she didn't want to lay on me, so finally she went into her floor gym where she zonked. I removed the toys and just left her there and I napped on the couch. I managed to stretch her til 10:20 when we finally woke P up for pancakes. Then we decided to have a picnic because it was such a beautiful day.

Getting out of the house into some sunlight was perfect for me. Of course, after getting these precious pics in that precious outfit, she promptly shat all over it!
Monday P decided to call in, and I had already decided to take a holiday, so we were all home again. We lazed around, cleaned some, and generally tried to have a good time. We also did P90X that morning, and surprise, I can do more push-ups than I could a week ago! P90X works!
Current weight: 139.8 (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Thrush situation: Z has still not shown any signs, but we're still treating her. I improved for a few days, but seem to have stalled. I'm not in terrible pain, but I'm not back to normal either. I'm thinking about calling the doctor to see if I need to change anything.

Abs Abs Abs
So, day 1 of February plan complete. No ice cream. And I've told P not to give me any, either.
And when I swam yesterday morning, I tried to think about engaging my abs. It must have worked, because when I went to do my 100 crunches that evening, they were already sore!!
It was 70 yesterday morning when I left for the Y, and by the time I got to work it was 40. This morning it was 20! I'm patting myself on the back for the brilliance of going to the Y yesterday, because there is no way I'm leaving the house to exercise in this cold. This morning I did Tae Bo (trying to think about my abs), and tomorrow morning I'll probably do a spin on the bike.
In baby news, I'm worried about my milk supply. It seemed to take a bit of a dive over the weekend, Sunday specifically, and it hasn't really gone back up. I don't know if nursing exclusively on the weekend actually adjusted my supply down (as I was over producing before) to closer to what Z actually needs, or if the 5K screwed me up (don't really think so), or what... yesterday I pumped exactly what she ate, and that worries me! I tried eating oatmeal yesterday morning, but it seems to have a 12 hour delayed onset, so I filled up as I was going home. Might try eating some tonight so I'm nice and full tomorrow at work. I am also vaguely considering supplementary pumping on the weekends. Before I'd do my morning pump but then exclusively nurse through the day. It is nice to have a break from the machine! But if I have to, I can try to pump more on the weekend to try and up my supply. I know that I shouldn't really be freaking out yet, but it is just that when you go from oversupply to exact supply, another dive could mean you aren't making enough, you know? I want to nip this in the bud!
I'm tired. 5-7 hours of sleep each day... I'm built for 8!
What else? Oh, work has been frustrating. That's all I'm going to say about that.
142.0 yesterday and also today. Been floating around 142 for a week or so, hopefully I'll be looking at another drop soon.

What else? Oh, work has been frustrating. That's all I'm going to say about that.
142.0 yesterday and also today. Been floating around 142 for a week or so, hopefully I'll be looking at another drop soon.

National Pie Day!
I must admit, National Pie day was hard on the diet. In fact, the entire weekend was hard on the diet. You see, I was very very good last weekend. So I was ready to chow down this weekend. And if there is one thing I've learned in dieting, total denial isn't good. Within reason, if I feel the need to eat something "bad", then I need to eat it, or risk falling off the wagon hard.
So on Friday when P got home, I demanded Freebirds. It was actually within my calories that day because of exercise and very low cal eating up to that point in the day. Good for me! (But I always suspect my calorie count is significantly less accurate when I go out, so I still count it as "bad".)
Then on Saturday I made roast and mashed potatoes. This is my favorite meal. Ever. From its easiness to the way it makes my house smell to the childhood memories it conjures - if I know what my last meal is before I die, it would be my choice. And I have to say, this time I made some damn fine mashed potatoes. Yukon golds, with Molly MacButter, Smart Balance butter, and milk, somehow guesstimated into the perfect proportions for buttery smooth goodness. Add the gravy from the roast and I was eating and grooving standing up in the kitchen. No time to go sit! Again with this meal, I don't think it is all bad, but I could have eaten fewer potatoes.
So when I saw all the tweets running around about National Pie Day, I wasn't sure I should ask P to go. But it is exactly the kind of think I want to get out and take Z to, and that finally won me over. I don't want Z to grow up in a boring and un-fun house because Mommy can't unclench and eat some good food occasionally! P, both surprisingly and unsurprisingly, took a little convincing, too. Surprisingly because I didn't think he'd turn down good food. Ever. Unsurprisingly because I know he doesn't really like to leave the house on Sundays, and because it was about a 20 minute drive. But I won him over, and off we headed to the Heights.
The event benefitted the Houston Food Bank, and featured Oh My Pocket Pies and Mmm Cupcakes, among others. They had savory pies, for a fee: I had a pot roast pie and a veggie pie, both super yummy. They also had free dessert pies: I had a smore pie. Omg, yummy. Then I got a lemon cupcake, and tried P's red velvet cupcake. Also omg yummy! There was live music, so we danced with Z, and art to look at. I'm really glad we went. Here are some pics, and sorry, none of the food: I was too hungry to take the time!

Weight this morning was down, despite yesterday: 142.6!

Progress?
Well, I have counted my calories every day so far. Not that I have come in under my target every day, but at least I'm counting, and making strides towards getting the eating under control.
And I have gone back to work. Which was stressful, but which I fairly sucessfully forgot after an hour with my babe.
I missed a day working out. Already. :-( What I did do, though, was 2 workouts yesterday to make up for the missed one the day before yesterday. I think this level of flexibility is what is going to be necessary for succeeding in the brave new world that I have created. So, while 31 workouts on 31 days is the goal, 31 workouts IN 31 days will be acceptable. This morning I didn't work out because Z was up twice during the night, and I was still rocking her back down when I should have been working out. No matter, I'll try for one this afternoon. I did Couch to 5K Week 1 Sunday and Tuesday... it is amazing to think that I started from Week 1 in 2007, and almost exactly 2 years after that I ran a marathon. And almost exactly 2 years after that, I started C25K again. Is there a 2013 marathon in my future...?
My official weight on 1/1 was 148.8, but that was in the evening, while I normally weigh in in the morning, so I'm guessing it was a little high. No matter, that was as best as I could do since I wasn't home that morning.
My weight this morning was 145.8. The lowest I've seen postpartum. I'll take it.

Week 31
Cravings:
Current weight: 159.8. I never thought I'd step on the scale and think, "Oh, good, still only 159.8 today." But I am .2 lbs from being up 30 lbs for this pregnancy, so I'll take my 159.8, thankyouverymuch.
Renovations:
Made good progress on cleaning out the office. Still have a ways to go, but we really accomplished a lot in a short, relatively painless time on Sunday. (And then have been useless thus far this week, which I hope to remedy when we get home from work tonight!) We need baseboards in the hall between nursery and guest, cleaning out of hallway between guest and office and ripping out of carpet and scraping of ceiling, and cleaning out of office. Those are the next steps...
Other stuff:
Still doing C25K Week 2. Goodness, it is hot. I haven't run in under 80 degrees in I don't know how long. And this is 80 degrees at 4am. Torture. Pure torture. I am so slow now. Walking would almost be faster, except I'm walking slower too. This morning on my last 2 intervals, I had a little tightening/cramping of the belly - Braxton-Hicks, perhaps? Calmed right down as soon as I got home, but wanted to make a note of it. Not sure how much longer I'll be running for, but at least I can still backwards graduate down another week before I have to stop completely!
*sigh* French fries, which give me heartburn. Cookies 'n' cream milkshakes (from Chick-fil-a), which make me fat.
Aversions:
Things that cause heartburn. Or make me fat. That unfortunately are all I want to eat.
Other symptoms:
Heartburn. Damn you, heartburn! And I'm tired. Oh, so tired! And feeling a little emotionally... unstable. Like I might start crying for no particular reason.
Things bugging me:
Heartburn. Complete lack of energy. I don't even have the energy to be seriously bugged any more.

Week 28
Cravings:
Current weight: 154.4 I made the under 24 pounds at the start of Week 28 like I was hoping for. And then the next day I went over! Oh well, if I gain a pound a week from here on out, I'll hit just over 35 lbs gained. And like I said, it seems to be slowing... a bit. I've got this graph on one of my iTouchy apps that tells me what my weight zone should be. For awhile, I was going exponentially above the upper end of my zone, but now I seem to be taking a parabolic curve back towards the zone. Which makes me happy. Don't get me wrong, this gain still sucks, but I'm feeling more resigned to it.
Renovations:
No go on finishing the first half of the upstairs this weekend, but we did make progress.
We went to Ikea on Friday. Got see-through curtains (which will have to be complemented with something not see-through behind, but they're so cute!!), a little flower light to hang on the wall, a nice bookcase, and a changing table. Got the changing table home and realized it is too small, have to take it back. Decided to attach changing pad to top of a chest that we had liked, so we'll exchange the table for the chest. More storage anyways. Put together the bookcase on Saturday, hung the curtains in the closet on Sunday. Haven't hung the curtains or valance over the window yet because I can't find a curtain rod that I like!
Also on Saturday, P discovered that the fan situation in the guest room is worse than we feared, so he opened up a hole in the ceiling to fix it. Ugh!! I was really upset. Not at him, just because it was yet another super-time-consuming delay in the whole process.
By Sunday that was mostly taken care of, so the floors in the hallway got laid (looks soooo good!!), a second coat of ceiling paint went up in the guest room, and the guest room got mostly painted... there is just a bit of finish work around the edges that P needs to take care of. We also got the guest room significantly cleaner in preparation for working on the floors.
Oh, also I agonized over the layout of the nursery, but I think I've finally settled on something that will look nice AND make sense. Where the cube is in the photos below, I think I'm going to put the chest/changing station. This makes sense to be because all the clothes will be in that one corner of the room, since the closet is right there. The crib is on the other side of the window against the far wall, and the bookcase is on that same wall in the opposite corner. The cube will be just to the right of the door as you walk in, and the chair will be between the cube and the bookcase. I know that no one can picture this right now but me, but I'll post some pics when it is all done! Suffice to say that I feel really relieved to have finally mentally settled on a layout.
Next up, I hope, is baseboards in the hallway, finally hanging the fan in the guest room, finishing the painting in the guest room, then ripping out the baseboards and taking the flooring into there. Once again, I really really really really hope we can be all the way through the guest room by the end of next weekend. Please?
Other stuff:
Had my 3 hour glucose tolerance test on Friday. It totally sucked. I woke up at 5:30, when P left, hungry, and couldn't fall back to sleep. The lab didn't open til 8, so I knew right then that it was gonna suck. I got there right at 8, and they didn't call me back until 8:25!!! I was practically crying by the time they finally called my name, because I knew that was 25 minutes longer without food! Took my fasting sample, made me drink the stuff, orange flavored this time, yuck, and then stuck me once on the hour for the next 3 hours. I brought plenty of reading with me, but the chairs were uncomfortable, and the pricks got progressively more painful, but that was that. All morning I dreamed about Freebirds, but by the time they finally let me go, I was so exhausted (probably from boredom and lack of food) that I stopped by Murphy's on the way home. Then I took a nap. And I felt hungry for pretty much the rest of the day.
Still doing C25K Week 2. This morning The Kid was on my sciatic again, but I finished. This sciatic thing is getting really old.
Last week at work was rough even though it was a short week from me comping myself back time from the week before. It was all long meetings that just completely wiped me out. This week might be a little rough because my assistant manager is out, and that always means more crap to deal with, but at least I think I'll be in my office more... also I'm still owed 1 hour, so home a little early on Thursday!
Screw everything except vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. (Not totally true: Saturday night I craved a baked potato. Which I ate. Yummily.)
Aversions:
Nope.
Other symptoms:
Heartburn. Headache. Sciatica.
Things bugging me:
It seems like nothing on the house moves as quickly as it could. It is soooo frustrating.

Week 27
Cravings:
Current weight: 153.4 (My book says I should have gained 15-24 lbs by week 28. Fingers crossed that I can go 4 more days and only .6 lbs so I can make the upper limit!!) On the good news side, the insane rate of weight gain seems to have maybe slowed down a bit. I hope.
Renovations:
Nursery floor sealed, baseboards installed, cute rug laying in there! I worked on Friday last week, so I'm getting off early a few days this week, so I'm hoping to get the crib assembled (yay!!), curtains picked out and hung (at least the valences, which are already purchased, up!), and start laying floors into the hallway and guest room before next weekend. If there is any possible way that we could finish out this side of the upstairs this weekend, I would be sooooo thrilled.
Other stuff:
I got a call at work last week that I failed my 1 hour glucose tolerance test. This means I might have gestational diabetes. I have to go in for the 3 hour test this Friday. Not looking forward to it. :-(
Still doing C25K Week 2. I got the 3 days I wanted last week, and felt great about that. I'm getting ever slower, and to be honest, the running is getting harder and harder, but I'm still banging out week 2. This morning I got through it even though The Kid was on my sciatic again, and it hurt like hell.
Last week at work was rough - I worked 48.5 hours. This week I've got so much going on that I'm not sure I'll manage to comp myself back the full 8.5 hours, but I'll try. I'll carry it over into next week if I have to. It is tough coming back on Monday for a busy week after such a loooooong week last week, and such a busy weekend. Hell, I'm already looking forward to this weekend, and I'm just getting started!!
Fruit and vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. Guess it might be this way until the end? Had a strong craving one day for french fries, too.
Aversions:
Nope.
Other symptoms:
Heartburn. Ugh!! This one is new. It started on Friday after having shrimp etouffee for lunch (from Treebeards, yum!). I was miserable by mid-afternoon. The PBJ I had for dinner felt like fire on the way down. Then on Saturday, Preston wanted Red Robin, so I got my usual BLTA croissant with fries and watermelon, and heartburn by 2pm again. Finally, on Sunday, I played it (what I thought was) super-safe. I had a wheat tortilla wrap with cheese, meat, mayo, spinach, sprouts, and tomato. And heartburn by 2pm. BOOOOO!!!! It'll be interesting to see if my typical work lunch of Amy's burrito and banana has the same effect today. All my books say that this is typical in the 3rd trimester, but boooo!
Another somewhat new one: my fuse is about half a centimeter long. It takes absolutely NO TIME at all for me to get ticked. It sucks.
Things bugging me:
I'm still just ready for the house to be done!

A Conversation with my Mom
Me: Mom, how much weight did you gain when you were pregnant with me?
Mom: Oh, about 21 pounds. 7 of those were in one month: from Thanksgiving to Christmas! Why, how much have you gained so far?
Me: 22 pounds.
*crickets*
I'm not getting fat, I'm making a baby. I can lose this after. I'm not getting fat, I'm making a baby. I can lose this after. I'm not getting fat, I'm making a baby. I can lost this after.
